Chapter Fourteen

Eden

How long will it take to get over a crush?

Since the settlement meeting that didn’t yield any kind of settlement, she hadn’t seen him again. Because he wasn’t going to give any more information about his divorce than was already said, there was no point in going to see him. That didn’t stop her from thinking about him at every waking moment she had or dreaming about him at every sleeping moment, for that matter. No matter how hard she tried, it seemed her heart was firmly attached to him somehow, and she couldn’t forget him.

She thought about asking Google the question that kept bugging her, or at the very least, tell somebody about it. Her childhood friend, Brenda would have been the perfect person to tell, but oddly, she didn’t feel like calling anybody on the phone to talk about him.

Brenda was a successful florist back in Tennessee, married with two kids. She often said that she couldn’t understand how Eden felt such compulsion to leave Tennessee for the city when life was easier back home. She didn’t understand the drive that propelled her to continue to chase her dreams of becoming a lawyer at all costs.

She didn’t think her friend would understand her situation right now either.

Brenda was as simple as a country girl can be and didn’t want much out of life save regular meals, a roof over her head, a family to love and to be left in peace. All that she’d gotten from her husband, John, a great guy from Wisconsin who moved in sometime after Eden left for college. The two had fallen in love and bam...they were married before she finished law school.

After a lot of deliberation, she picked up the phone to call Brenda anyway. It was only last week they spoken on the phone when Brenda called her on her birthday. She had just received a tongue lashing from Melanie on Declan’s case and she was afraid she wouldn’t sound too enthusiastic on the phone. Brenda was not one to push, so she had simply wished her a happy birthday, telling her she was available whenever Eden needed to talk.

“Hello, girlfriend,” Brenda greeted over the phone.

She didn’t know when her friend picked up the call; she wasn’t even aware her phone had started to ring. “Hey Brenda, how are you doing?”

“Right now, I’m very excited and I’m really glad you’re the first to hear this.”

Her voice really sounded animated over the phone and Eden wondered idly if she won the lottery or something. “What gives?”

“Just guess what?” Brenda said excitedly.

She grinned despite her own predicament. She could imagine Brenda jumping giddily like a school girl right now. “Hmmm... John was promoted?” she asked.

“Nope,” Brenda replied. “Take another guess.”

“You know I’m bad at guesses, please tell me,” she whined to her friend in desperation. Brenda had succeeded in piquing her interest about this unexpected news and she was now as curious as a cat. For the moment, she didn’t even remember she called Brenda with a particular purpose in mind.
